Description

Job Summary

Global Remote Sensing Manager

Remote (from home) with travel

Starting salary for this position is £35,904 GBP / approx. $48,100 USD per annum

About MAG:

MAG (Mines Advisory Group) is an international humanitarian organisation based in Manchester, UK, and working in 32 countries. We remove landmines and unexploded ordnance to release safe and productive land for communities, and work to reduce the threat of armed violence by supporting governments to safely manage weapons and ammunition. In 1997, MAG was a co-recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize for our work campaigning for the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention.

About the role:

Joining our growing Programme Information Management unit, you will develop practical, innovative methodologies and tools to enhance MAG’s operational efficiency, decision making, and situational awareness across our global portfolio of programmes. You will lead research and development processes to advance the use of Earth Observation (EO) data and drone-based solutions in Humanitarian Mine Action (HMA) and Weapon and Ammunition Management (WAM) operational contexts. You will play a key role in partnership development, particularly focused on enriching our theoretical and empirical practices. You will integrate environmental considerations and uphold MAG’s core values to promote our mission and extend our impact where it matters most.

Please note that as part of MAG's commitment to safeguarding, this post is subject to background checks before an offer of employment is confirmed. For more information on MAG’s approach to safeguarding and background checks on our website**.**

MAG is committed to the principles of diversity, equality and inclusion. If you think you would be suited to one of our roles we would welcome your application regardless of your background. We strive to provide an inclusive and supportive working environment where all employees feel respected and supported in fulfilling their potential.

About you:

Proficiency with remote sensing systems and GIS software for data processing, analysis, including machine learning, and visualization is essential. You should have proven experience leading on remote sensing projects, including developing operational use cases and standard operating procedures. You should hold a degree in a relevant field, with strong skills in project management and report writing. You will be a strong communicator, able to translate complex data into actionable insights and build meaningful partnerships to enhance MAG’s practice. You should be adaptable and proactive, with the willingness and flexibility to travel internationally, including in challenging environments. Formal training or certification in drone operations, and knowledge of international standards and best practices for humanitarian mine action and weapons and ammunition management would be advantageous.

We’re looking for someone with:

  • Proficiency with remote sensing platforms (satellites, drones) and sensor technologies (optical, radar, LiDAR, multispectral), combined with hands-on experience using GIS software (e.g., ArcGIS, QGIS, ENVI, ERDAS Imagine) for data processing, analysis, and visualization.

  • Familiarity with satellite imagery providers and datasets, including both open-access (e.g., Copernicus/Sentinel, Landsat) and commercial sources (e.g., Maxar, Planet, Airbus).

  • Proficiency in machine learning techniques for geospatial data analysis, including image classification, feature extraction, and predictive modeling.

  • Desirable experience with drone data workflows, including flight planning, photogrammetry, and orthomosaic/3D model generation, alongside knowledge of safe operational procedures and relevant regulations.

Benefits and Further Information:

  • Salary: £35,904 per annum and this increases with service.

  • Pension: MAG has a salary sacrifice group personal pension plan in place, and matches employee’s contributions up to 5%. This is only available to individuals based in the UK.

  • Leave: We recognise our staff work hard and need the appropriate time out to stay motivated. Annual Leave starts at five weeks each year and increases with service to six weeks. We also offer paid sick leave, and the amount of the entitlement increases with service. Once you’ve been with MAG for two years, you’re entitled to 13 weeks. MAG also has policies on compassionate leave, flexible working and family leave, including maternity, paternity, adoption and surrogacy leave.

  • Insurance: MAG provides personal accident insurance and life assurance to all staff, as well as medical and repatriation insurance for any period spent overseas whilst working for MAG.

  • Professional Subscriptions: MAG will pay for the cost of your annual subscription/membership fee for one professional body in certain circumstances.

  • Employee Assistance Programme: MAG offers free access to Health Assured, a service providing 24/7 confidential support and expert advice on a wide range of issues.

This role is based remote from home, with expected travel around 30% of working time. MAG will consider applications from candidates who are based in any country, however the final decision on whether employment in a specific country location can be supported will be based on a compliance and budget check and be reviewed by MAG’s senior management.

Please note that the terms and conditions of employment may be set according to location, to ensure legal compliance, and therefore it is not possible to include full details here. The details provided below are relevant to UK-based applicants.

Where a candidate is based on a location where MAG is not registered as an employer, employment may be through an Employer of Record service. In all cases, the employee will be subject to tax and other statutory deductions in line with the relevant law of their country of domicile. You should therefore clearly set out the country that you would wish to be based remotely in, and MAG will provide further details on the method of employment in that country, and the relevant tax and statutory deduction implications, to candidates invited for interview.

We are happy to receive flexible working and job share requests in your application. If you are applying with an existing job share partner email us at recruitment@maginternational.org for further guidance.
